Text to MIDI Converter — Turn Letters & Notes Into MIDI
Free and private online converter
Type any text or note names and get a ready-to-download MIDI file. The free converter maps letters to a C major melody and parses note text like C4 1 — all in your browser, with no upload.
Letter-to-note mapping
Each letter is mapped to a note in the C major scale so the melody always sounds harmonious. Lowercase a–g use the middle octave, uppercase A–G one octave higher, and numbers 1–7 play do re mi fa sol la ti.
Punctuation & spaces (space, ., ,, -, _, |, /) become rests. Any other character is skipped.
Set a note's length (the * trick): put a * right after a letter, then the number of beats that letter should sound. Examples: e*2 = E for 2 beats, a*3 = A for 3 beats, c*0.5 = C for half a beat. Notes without a * use the Default note length.
Plain digits are notes, not beats: a number without a * is played as do re mi, so E22 = E, then re, then re (G6 + re + re). To make E ring for 2 beats then play re, write E*22 = E for 2 beats, then re. A number on its own (like 1 2 3) still plays do re mi.
TEXT TO MIDI
What Is Text to MIDI?
Text to MIDI is a way to turn typed characters or note names into a playable music file. Instead of recording an instrument, you describe the music with text — either by letting each letter become a note, or by writing exact notes and durations. This is perfect for quickly sketching a melody, converting sheet-music notation into a MIDI file, or turning a favourite sentence into a tune you can drop into any DAW.

Two Ways to Turn Text Into MIDI
Letters to Notes maps each character of your sentence to a note in the C major scale — spaces and punctuation become rests. It is the fastest way to hear any text as music.
Note Text to MIDI reads exact note names and durations, like C4 1 or G#4 0.5. Use this when you already know the melody, such as when converting sheet music or guitar tab into a MIDI file.
Both modes run instantly in your browser — the conversion is totally free and private. You can also learn more about the MIDI specification or the open-source pitch detection we use elsewhere on the site.

FAQ
Text to MIDI Frequently Asked Questions
How do I convert text to MIDI?
Type your text into the box, choose Letters or Note Text mode, and click Generate MIDI. The converter maps each character to a C major scale note (letters have fixed pitches) and produces a downloadable .mid file.
What does each letter map to in text to MIDI?
Lowercase a–g map to C5–B5 in the C major scale, uppercase A–G map one octave higher, and numbers 1–7 play do re mi fa sol la ti. Spaces and punctuation become rests, so any sentence turns into a recognizable melody.
Can I convert note text to MIDI?
Yes. Switch to Note Text mode and write one note per line as NOTE DURATION, for example C4 1 or C#5 0.5. The duration is in beats, so you control exactly how long each note plays.
Is the text to MIDI converter free online?
Yes — this free text to MIDI converter works right in your browser with no signup, no watermarks, and no usage limits. It is one of our free music conversion tools.
Does text to MIDI upload my text anywhere?
No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser. Your text never leaves your device, so it is completely private.
What is the difference between text to MIDI and audio to MIDI?
Text to MIDI turns typed characters or note names into notes. Audio to MIDI (like our MP3 to MIDI tool) analyses a recording and transcribes the sound into notes. Use text to MIDI when you want to write a melody; use audio to MIDI when you have a recording.
Can I use text to MIDI to make a song from a sentence?
Yes. Type any sentence and the letters become a melody in the C major scale. Change the tempo and note length to shape the feel, then download the MIDI and open it in any DAW.
What MIDI note format does the converter output?
It outputs a standard .mid file (SMF format, Type 0) that opens in every major DAW — Ableton, FL Studio, Logic, GarageBand, MuseScore and more.
Is there a free text to MIDI music converter?
Yes — our text to MIDI music converter is free, no signup, and runs privately in your browser. Type a sentence or note text and download the MIDI instantly.
